Nursing Perspectives on Humor by Karyn Buxman

 Top learning moments:

  1. Humor has some incredible benefits – physically for your circulatory system and psychologically for how you deal with stress.  We often think that humor is some side benefit that just helps us to enjoy life better, but the research shows that humor has some incredible physical benefits including helping to reduce stress, dealing with physical pain, and even, as Karyn mentioned, changing your genetics to positively impact future generations.
  2. You don’t have to be funny to have a sense of humor.  We think that if we’re not the class clown we can’t benefit from humor.  Karyn mentioned two aspects of humor that make up our HQ – the appreciation of humor and the application of humor.  So open your eyes to the funny things you see every day and begin to intentionally develop an appreciation for humor and then share it with other people.  You don’t want to be that person that’s always telling jokes because you think that’s what defined you as an individual, but you do want to authentically share funny things with people to give them the opportunity to see and experience more joy in their lives.
